Psychotherapy may be more appropriate than Counselling alone when the issues you are experiencing are more serious and/or well established.  The exact difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy is a topic of some debate, but there is a general understanding that a Psychotherapist is able to work with a wider range of clients and is able to offer more in-depth work.

When I am working at psychotherapeutic depth with a client you could observe everything described on the "Counselling" page, but also a significant emphasis on childhood experiences and relationships, and on our therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for understanding and healing.

If you believe that Psychotherapy may be appropriate in your situation, then it is important that you work with a Therapist who has the training and experience necessary to be registered as a Psychotherapist with a professional body such as the UKCP http://www.psychotherapy.org.uk/
